To anyone watching this video, THIS IS NOT THE OKC NATO SPECIFICATION 499. The official version is Nato spec and has an NSN. This knife is missing features the Nato version has. This has no fuller and the retention strap is not stitched along with riveted (it should not be able to swivel like that). There are likely other not so obvious differences to reduce costs. I've heard of (but never personally seen) a "Walmart" version of this knife made by OKC, which this may be, or this isn't OKC at all (Rothco or some other non Nato copy). No shit it's well designed, yours just isn't produced to military spec.

Ontario 499 is the surviving manufacture of a 1950s USN contract. The Rockwell of 50-56 is relatively soft to A. facilitate ease of field sharpening B. resist snapping in the cold arctic and marine environs  of it's perceived use. The but is hexagon to fit into a liferaft paddle and breaking cockpit plexiglass in confined spaces, improvised spearing and light hammering ( nuts, shellfish and bone for marrow.) The stone is aggressive to reflect the need for ease of sharpening a ROUGH USE EDGE. The sawback ( for egress from damaged aircraft) is perfect for precise grooves in saplings to lash paracord AND shavings from the later 1975 DOANS  magnesium bars ( often substituting for the stone in the pouch after flat diamond plates became available.) The FULLER is not machined but part of the forging process and does increase I beam tensile strength. The metal scabbard tip is to prevent injury in a hard parachute landing. I was issued mine 1973 USCG Airstation Kodiak Alaska. ALL aircrew . and service branches have used this. It's never been a USAF survival knife, Vietnam Jet Pilot's knife and definitely never a bolt knife. My knife AND sheath are as good as the day I first put an edge on the blade and oiled the sheath. It's called maintenance and respecting your tools. Not bad for a knife envisioned for short term survival use by the users.

Incidentally, the saw teeth were for sawing aircraft aluminum…so you could get out of your crushed cockpit…its more if a rasp for wood, regrettably…

I retired from the US Air Force. That knife was made for pilots for survival. It seems you dislike the knife with lots of negative comments about it. Return it if you are not happy. I have one issued to me and it still works! Knife and sheath.

I have 1 given to my father by a yank pilot stationed in G.B. good as new apart from the stone has broke ,my dad would have been 79 this year

I’m 66 years old and this is the first time I heard it called a “bolt” knife. AFSK is usually what’s it called.

Got one of these and the original blade shape is different from the older models. The press stud clasp on my sheath is sewn into place and not able to rotate. A farrier freind of mine has given the blade a mirror polished convex grind which looks pretty but is really no more use than the original factory edge. I can't stop smelling the sheath though – it's gorgeous!!

had one from the 50s that's sitting at the bottom of a lake and I finally replaced it with an actual Ontario but I'm a little nervous.

This must be the Walmart version. It doesn't has the blood groove thingy and the clip point is not sharpen. Now I'm really curious if its 1095 steel?
